Welcome to Aligarh

Aligarh Map Aligarh is situated in the western part of Uttar Pradesh and is a very important education and commercial hub of India. Aligarh is also famous as a center for various movements that have helped in re-shaping India with the start of the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1875. This College is today known as Aligarh Muslim University and is famous worldwide as a hub for western culture.

This movement was started to help Muslims come to terms with changing realities of the world. Aligarh has also been a launch pad for nationalist movements in India, including the famous Khilafat Movement of 1920s.with this, a new breed of Muslim intelligence people were found in Aligarh, who contributed generously to the functioning of the government and its authorities. There are many nationalist leaders who have made Aligarh famous like Zakir Hussein, Syed Brothers and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

Today Aligarh is an important business center of Uttar Pradesh which is most famous for its lock industry. The locks that are produced in Aligarh are export quality, and exported to different parts of the world. Aligarh is also famous for its brass hardware and sculptures.

Being a railroad junction, Aligarh has developed into a commercial center of an agricultural region which produces wheat, sugarcane, cotton, corn, barley and millet. In addition to the lock industry, the other industries of Aligarh include flour milling, processing of raw cotton and manufacture of butter and glass.

When in Aligarh, you have to make a visit to the old city of Koil; where you find ruins of Fort Aligarh of the 16th century, which was captured from the Marathas by the British in the year 1803. So it can be seen that both casual visitors and researchers should make a visit to Aligarh.
